The Peninsula, Tokyo

The 314-room peninsula, right on the imperial Palace Gardens, has a lock on location. The building, a granite-clad landmark, is rich in Japan’s design heritage—from lattices on lobby walls to lacquered desks in the rooms. Equally impressive is the Peninsula’s well-thought- out gadgetry, found throughout the hotel: cordless phones convert to mobiles for use off- site, coffee pod machines deliver round-the-clock espressos, and handy nail driers in the rooms enable expert manicures.
